week seven, sailing

Week seven at sea has passed again and brings the ship very close to their first destination; Portsmouth UK. Winds have changed a couple of times and eventually turned for some 'racing towards home' as the end of the voyage is already coming near now. Read below about the highlights past week and find full texts on Mott's blog and the Tres Hombres blog; 'The Tres Hombres has a nice start now, moving swiftly along with a good breeze in a good direction toward Portsmouth, England for the big chocolate delivery. Back in the 19th century this route, we take from the Azores to Europe, was often...

why we support fair transport

The first time I heard that just 15 of the world's biggest ships emit as much pollution as all the world's 760m cars I was shocked. That is outrages! Pollution from ships is very little regulated. Shipping emissions have escalated in the past 15 years as China has emerged as the world's manufacturing capital. To ship all this cargo, a new intercontinental container ship has been developed which is extremely cost-efficient. However, it uses diesel engines as powerful as land-based power stations but with the lowest quality fuel.... I guess because we don't actually see it, so we don't know it. Other...

The Sea, by captain Jorne

Since the departure from Grenada, end of March, the ship and its crew (and the 24.000 bars of chocolate!) have been mainly at sea. One wonders here on land how it is to pass such long periods on the sea, being surrounded only by endless views of water, day and night. Captain Jorne made a blog post on the ship's blog, to explain (or at least try, as he says). His original Dutch text is translated here, and I've added some pictures that the crew has made earlier on this voyage on the sea - views speak for themselves... THE SEA, BY CAPTAIN JORNE (Original version of the text in Dutch...

Fifth week – on the Azores

The end of last week the Tres Hombres crew set foot on land again, for the first time since three weeks of sea. They've arrived in the Azores and spent the week there on the Island Faial, preparing to continue their journey later this week. So a short overview of the week, with some quotes of Mott's blog; 'On Monday, Charlie and I hitched a few rides to the other side of this Island, Faial, and walked up a mountain through some tine villages. It was incredibly beautiful. This island has an amazing mixed terrain of green grass and bits of thick forest with a kind of mixed foliage, sub-tropical...

The forth week on the sea

As the voyage over seas of the Grenada Chocolate on board the Tres Hombres continues, they have already been sailing for 4 weeks now. I've made a compilation of several highlights of their stories on board this last week before arriving to the Azores today. A selection of the blog that Mott is writing from the ship;   'This chocolate delivery vessel I have been crossing the ocean on for the past 22 days is very fast. The only vessel I have sailed that is faster is my little 4 meter Hobie Cat on which I deliver chocolate from Grenada to Carriacou, a 20 mile journey I make in as little...
