Fair Trade

More than Fair Trade! care for logo's, but don't be lead only by logo's! Unfortunately the cocoa industry is still today an industry where exploitation and slavery and underpaid employment is wide spread. Initiatives are born to produce chocolate called 'towards slavery free chocolate' which are very good to create awareness but they admit themselves it is nowadays almost impossible to be absolutely sure to eat slavery free chocolate if you buy mass market chocolate. The Fair Trade label is a great initiative to create awareness of consumers about the circumstances in the chocolate production...

Arrival in Portsmouth!

After steady wind up to the English Channel, the crew of Tres Hombres was surprised to find almost no wind at all on their way into Portsmouth. This caused a delay of a few days, as they were ‘tacking’ every few hours to make as much progress as possible… On Monday we set out on a yaught to escort them into the harbor and a tugboat pushed them the last part because there really was no wind… Exhausting last days for the crew before getting to the port and therefore an extra warm welcome upon arrival – friends and family waiting for them and many curious and interesting visitors. A...

Nominee to Award: Best Documentary

Tonight is the night of the Milan Film Festival (MIFF) where the documentary Nothing Like Chocolate is nominated  in the category of Best Documentary! This documentary tells the message of hope in an an industry entrenched in enslaved child labor, irresponsible corporate greed, and tasteless, synthetic products.  'From currency to candy, chocolate reflects a rich history saturated with sacred ritual, endorphin highs, hip anti-oxidants, exotic sensuality and high quality luxury. Nothing Like Chocolate adds new depth to the stories of chocolate.' Definitely see the trailer and look out for the documentary...

week seven, sailing

Week seven at sea has passed again and brings the ship very close to their first destination; Portsmouth UK. Winds have changed a couple of times and eventually turned for some 'racing towards home' as the end of the voyage is already coming near now. Read below about the highlights past week and find full texts on Mott's blog and the Tres Hombres blog; 'The Tres Hombres has a nice start now, moving swiftly along with a good breeze in a good direction toward Portsmouth, England for the big chocolate delivery. Back in the 19th century this route, we take from the Azores to Europe, was often...

The Sea, by captain Jorne

Since the departure from Grenada, end of March, the ship and its crew (and the 24.000 bars of chocolate!) have been mainly at sea. One wonders here on land how it is to pass such long periods on the sea, being surrounded only by endless views of water, day and night. Captain Jorne made a blog post on the ship's blog, to explain (or at least try, as he says). His original Dutch text is translated here, and I've added some pictures that the crew has made earlier on this voyage on the sea - views speak for themselves... THE SEA, BY CAPTAIN JORNE (Original version of the text in Dutch...

Week six – and back to sea!

Already the sixth week for the Tres Hombres - alias the chocolate boat - on the journey to deliver chocolate from the Caribbean to Europe. A short review of last week, taken from Mott's blog who is in direct contact with the crew, as they passed  last days on the Azores and had the departure to Portsmouth UK: 'In the next two days, the Tres Hombres will continue the journey to Portsmouth, England., approximately 10 day sail, but completely dependednt on wind and weather as always. Then, on to Amsterdam. I am working on landing evenst for both Portsmouth and Amsterdam, most likely May 19th...
